Qualification: A graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, Richard earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois. He is a frequent speaker and author on litigation techniques and has conducted numerous in-house seminars for clients on security, transportation and litigation issues. He has appeared many times on WGN Radio, Channel 11-WTTW and ABC News. Richard has also addressed the Illinois House of Representatives on highway safety issues. In addition to serving in the past as chair of the Auto Law Committee of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association, Richard was the chair of three ABA National Teaching Institutes on road crash litigation. He is also a past chair of the Chicago Area Appeal of the Anti Defamation League of B’nai Brith. Richard is also A.V. rated.
For more than 30 years, Richard Kuhlman has specialized in litigating complex commercial and personal injury cases. Richard is also well-experienced in patent infringement litigation and other intellectual property matters. He has tried many plaintiffs’ cases to verdict, winning more than fifteen multimillion dollar verdicts and settlements in cases involving medical malpractice; brain injury; negligent road design; negligent security planning; crashes involving cars, trains and trucks; and industrial accidents. He has also successfully litigated several patent infringement cases before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and United States District Courts in Illinois and Wisconsin.
He has appeared in courts throughout Illinois and the United States. Richard is licensed in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin and is a member of the Federal Trial Bar.
Richard has authored two nationally published books and legal authorities, Killer Roads, on negligent road design and maintenance, and Safe Places?, dealing with security issues and litigation. In addition, he is the principal author and editor of the multivolume series on Transportation Facility Negligence published by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. He has written numerous articles for the ABA Journal, Res Jestae Magazine, Trial Magazine, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and many other publications and book chapters dealing with litigation issues.
- Successfully tried a shattered neck and vertebrae injury case obtaining a six figure verdict;
- Served as lead plaintiff’s counsel in a teenager’s drowning/wrongful death trial convincing a jury to award damages of $2.8 million (Defendant’s highest settlement offer was $500,000.00); and
- Served as lead plaintiff’s counsel in a vehicle crash case where the plaintiff suffered spinal injuries and received a $4.5 million jury verdict.
